[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] TCP/IP

Leisner.Henr@XEROX.COM (marty) (07/31/88)

I'm using the KA9Q (along with NCSA and XNS PC Network).

I've noticed the KA9Q package doesn't restore the ethernet interrupt vector when
it exits.

So after running KA9Q if I do anything on the XNS net, the interrupt vectors to
KA9Qs old space in ram and barfs big time.

Is this the way the current version works or is it fixed? Should be a simple
fix.

Whether you can do this or not depends a great deal on the network card in
use. With PC/TCP, we seem to be able to get away with saving the old vector
and restoring it on exit (3+ survives it) with the 3C501 and 3C503. We can't
with the 3C505 or the 3C523. On cards like the 3C501, where there is little
on-board state information, it is relatively likely that this will work.
That it works on the 3C503 is perhaps an indication of 3+'s willingness to
reset the card when the on-board state is changed. Both the 3C523 and the
3C505 have even more on-board state, which gets changes when we start up
(and we can't save/restore it).

This is the kind of situation that our Packet Driver spec is meant to deal
with - two packages which both want to use the same interface. Phil has
a KA9Q which uses it, but you'd need the XNS vendor's attention to make
their code support it as well.

I have the executables for the KA9Q tcpip package for the IBM-PC
and the Amiga computers. What I want to do is hook up my pc and amiga
via slip and transfer files via ftp. First, I can't find any docs
on setting up the amiga version of the software, which makes things
even worse. Can anyone give me some pointers on how to set up
a connection like this? I am not interested in packet radio, I just
want to transfer files as effortlessly as possible (if I get this to
work I will be adding my ST to the net as well). Also if you have
any autoexec.net files you would be willing to send me, it would be
much appreciated. Please email your response to pmartin@ucqais.uc.edu

I am trying to find the sources for the KA9Q PC based TCP/IP
and the MIT TCP/IP packages.

Please send mail or reply.]

I have net access for FTP.

Execucom is building an MS Windows 3.0 software product
which supports TCP/IP using the socket library model.
Frankly, we were hoping that Sun would have already
delivered the supporting network software ... In any case,
we need to get on with this aspect of the project and are
looking for commercial software supporting TCP/IP via
sockets under Windows 3 (including 386 enhanced mode).

I am doubtful about using the public domain software so
frequently discussed here. This route would seem to require
a good deal more technical expertise than a commercial
package. A commercial package would also seem to reduce
legal difficulties when reselling the software. Is this too
conservative?

"Network Windows (TM) Software Development Kit" from
Distinct Corporation in Saratoga, CA claims to meet my
requirements. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who
has experience with this product and/or company. Pointers
to alternate products would be gratefully accepted.

If there appears to be any interest, I post any alternate
vendors and product reviews.

Thanks in advance.
