Anybody have the "Post Office Protocol Daemon" running under PC Minix using ethernet? Or any SMTP (Unix) mailer for the Mac/PC? If you're interested in the story read on: We have a network of Mac's over localtalk and PC's over ethernet both using a Novell file server and PC router to communicate with the outside world. Telnet, FTP and Appleshare are running on the Mac's and Telnet, FTP, IPX, lpr, ping, finger etc. are running on the PC's. The missing link is mail. It needs to be *very* cheap. Solutions I've seen: ka9q NOS/BM- An excellent package but not designed to coexist easily with Novell and the mailer user interface is Unix like (definitely not a plus - our Mac users look aghast every time I mention it). I've modified it so that it can use Novell directory protections to improve security but it still needs a fair bit of work to make it useful and reliable in our environment. Pegasus - Also a good package but it doesn't look like it will be ported to the Mac any time soon. It also doesn't talk SMTP (yet?). PCIP SMTP - Works, but can't handle mail reception. Commercial - There are various packages available to join Novell MHS with SMTP but all the ones I've seen cost big $'s and it is not at at all clear that Mac's are supported. POPmail - Available on Mac's and PC's at the right price. The user interface is good, though PC users aren't notified of new mail. Unfortunately it requires a multi-tasking server (i.e. Unix) and we don't have one available. However, if somebody's ported it to Minix... So, if you've done this or are aware of any other cheap solution to mail for Mac/PC/SMTP I'd really like to hear from you :^) Please mail as I am not a regular reader of this news group. If there is enough interest I'll post a summary.
