[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] Problem configuring IBM OS/2 TCP/IP

RICH@WVNVM.WVNET.EDU (Rich Lynch) (10/29/90)

I'm having problems getting my OS/2 TCP/IP to work and am hoping someone on
this list can help.

I have an IBM PS/2 55SX with a 3COM Ehterlink/MC card (3C523) and an IBM
3270 emulation card (3270 Connection). I'm running OS/2 EE 1.2 with all of
the latest fixes applied. I'm also running IBM/TCPIP for OS/2 1.1. I'm
connected to a statewide ethernet which is bridged with VitaLink boxes.
With this setup the entire state looks like one large ethernet network.
We are also connected to the Internet via a Proteon gateway. We are a class
B network with addresses 129.71.x.x and my machine is at address 129.71.3.4.
The Proteon gateway is at address 129.71.1.11.

Using the configuration program which is part of the TCPIP product (ICAT) I
have setup the configuration as follows.

1. Network parameters
   IP Address: 129.71.3.4
   Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
   Broadcast address: <blank>
   Destination: <blank>

2. Routing information
   DEFAULT <blank> 129.71.1.11

This means that all connections to addresses that are not 129.71.x.x
should be sent to the gateway at address 129.71.1.11.

Although I did not define it, a routing entry is automatically setup for
   the local network as follows.

   NET 129.71.0.0 129.71.3.4

Which means connections to addresses 129.71.x.x are via my machine.

The above routing information is displayed when I issue the NETSTAT -R
   command.

The problem is I can't connect to anything but myself. If I ping or FTP to
my own address (129.71.3.4) everything seems to work. However, if I try any
other address I get no response. This is true whether the address is a local
one or a non-local one. I have tried just about every combination of route
definitions I can think of and it still doesn't work. The manual states that
if you can ping yourself but not others then the problem is with the broadcast
address or with the routing definitions. I have no trouble at all using the
NCSA software from the DOS window. Does anybody have any ideas about what is
wrong with my configuration setup. Any help anyone can provide would be very
much appreciated. Thanks. -Rich

One (likely) reason is that you configured CM for 802.3 instead of DIX.
