We are considering purchasing PC-TCP plus and we would like to know the differences between these 3 protocols. Are any of them better than any other? I don't think FTP Software supplies servers for these protocols, does anyone know of an ftp site for server code ? --- Kelly Thompson kelly@srchtec.uucp (registered) search technology, inc. emory!stiatl!srchtec!kelly Atlanta, Georgia (404) 441-1457 (office) .'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'. POP2 -- ames.arc.nasa.gov (128.102.18.3) ucdavis.ucdavis.edu (128.120.2.1) POP3 -- lilac.berkeley.edu (128.32.136.12) You may want to pick a copy of the anonymous ftp list from pilot.njin.edu (128.6.7.38). It's very helpful.. Mohamad

We are considering purchasing PC-TCP plus and we would like to know the differences between these 3 protocols. For the long form, read the RFCs (PCMAIL is RFC 1056). Here is a summary: POP2 is very simple. You can fetch a message, or fetch/delete a message. POP3 has more features, including bboard support, but we haven't been able to locate anyone who is actually using the bboard handling that is in one of the available servers. Both POP protocols only retrieve mail; you use SMTP to send it. PCMAIL is more complicated, in that it maintains a distributed mail database on a central 'repository' that you can access from several different host systems: if you delete a message while using your workstation at work, the message will show up as deleted the next time you dial in from your PC at home and its copy of the database gets synchronized. I read 'pcip' as a PCMAIL bboard. Are any of them better than any other? The only supported servers you can get are for POP2, but the protocol is obsolescent. The distributed database in PCMAIL was intended to solve problems with people who read mail from multiple hosts, some of which might not have full-time Internet connectivity; I use it on my portable, but since I only read mail from one machine at the moment, I could get by with POP3. I don't think FTP Software supplies servers for these protocols, does anyone know of an ftp site for server code ? Mark Lambert's final PCMAIL server is on allspice.lcs.mit.edu, but we have some fixes in the one we offer on our 'unsupported software' diskettes. If someone was on the ball here, it will already be up on vax.ftp.com, along with at least one POP2 and POP3 server. If not, then by 09-Nov-90 they'll be in one of the PC80x directories (contents of the 'unsupported' disks). The manual for 2.05 lists 2 other freeware POP3 servers in addition to those named by Mohamed, but I don't have a copy handy... James B.
