[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] Looking for Info on TCP/IP packages

rwmira01@ULKYVX.BITNET (NEWS_PERSONALNAME) (11/20/90)

I have some (what I hope are) simple questions about TCP/IP products. But
before I get to that, here is my background and what I am attempting:

I know what telnet and ftp do and I know how to basically use them. I know how
to manage a Unix file server for StarLAN (and can program in 'C') but I have
little expertise on the low-level networking.

We are using AT&T StarGROUP 3.2 on a Unix file server (intel 386) with AT&T
Unix Sys V R 3.2.2. I have a StarServer E with Sys V R4 on order. When we are
done, we will be on a 10BASE-T network with other Unix boxes, as well as our
VAX/VMS. Within the next 6 months we hope to become a real internet site and
put our IBM Mainframe on Internet was well.

Now for my question(s).

I am looking for a Cheap (read free/public domain where applicable)
implementation of both TCP/IP and NFS. My goals are:

1) Allow the StarGROUP PC Client to TELNET/FTP to our Unix File Server
2) Allow the StarGROUP PC Client to TELNET/FTP to any other TCP/IP host that
   I can reach.
3) Allow Macintosh's on the network to access the Unix file server as their
file server (Apple tells me as long as NFS is on the Unix box their happy).
4) Allow the Unix server to be a TCP/IP host for the world
5) Multiple session via Windows 3.0
6) Possible Netnews at the PC desktop (low priority)
7) Mail at the desktop (if possible)

Over the weekend I acquired the binaries to NCSA/Telnet and I was able to FTP
between a couple of PCs today. I couldn't get it to work with the Packet
Driver (AT&T.COM) for our network cards, but the Netbios version worked with
StarGROUP loaded but I got some weird data on the screen, but the files seemed
to transfer well.

What do I need to get TCP/IP on my unix box, preferably public domain?
Any advice in pulling this off would be of great help.

Please respond by E-Mail, although I will subscribe to these groups for the
next couple of weeks.

Thanks in advance
