[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] File sharing across TIPs

chas@tira.uchicago.edu (Charles Blair) (12/20/90)

Can someone point me to a source of information about TIPs? For
example, can file-sharing be implemented over a TIP? (I imagine if it
could, speed would be slow.) The scenario I have in mind is a bunch of
PCs going out over COM1 connected to a TIP that is then connected to
a Sun Sparcstation via Ethernet.

Some people here seem to think that TIPs in an asynchronous
environment are the panacea granting access to all the goodies that a
networked environment has to offer. I have my doubts. I think the
easier way to go is to put Ethernet boards in the PCs and have them do
TCP/IP directly, but maybe I'm wrong.

Please reply to me and I'll summarize to the net if there is
sufficient interest.

I'd be very interested in the summary of responses to your query.
We're prettt much in the same situation here & could really use
clarification of the issues/alternatives available.
thanks,
