[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] Coexistence problem: 3com 3+share NCSA TELnet

PVJQC@CUNYVM (12/25/90)

I recently got 7.1.1 ver. packet driver for 3c523 boards which we are
using in our PS/2-80s. I have 3com 3+share network running on these PS/2s
and I use ncsa telnet/ftp from the same machine to login to SUN and
other machines on the same ethernet. Right now I can not run both of
3com 3+share and ncsa telnet simultaneously on my PS/2. When I boot
my PS/2 without 3com 3+share drivers and then run 3c523 packet driver
ncsa telnet/ftp works fine.
I would like to know if there is any newer packet driver for 3c523
which will allow me run 3+share and ncsa together or am I doing
something drastically wrong? Basically as a workstation on the 3com
net my config.sys file has all those drivers. My Autoexec.bat runs
runminds, netbios, msredir and then I load 3c523 Packet driver with
0x60(packet int. addr); 3(irq #); 0x300(ioaddr); 0xc000(base mem. addr).
When the machine boots up it loads every thing fine. after logging into
3com net I try to run ncsa ftp/telnet the machine hangs. The only
way to get out is by powering off and on again. My config. tel file has
hardware=packet; addr=0(packet driver class for ethernet); ioaddr=0x300
entries.
Could some one help? If this has been answered before, my apologies.
Have a good holiday season every one...

3com 3+share does not use the packet driver. Instead, it has its own
incompatible Ethernet driver. They could implement a packet driver client
for 3+share in less than a week if they realized their customers wanted
one. The thing for you to do is call 3Com and tell them that you want
packet driver support for 3+share. If the person you talk to doesn't
know what a packet driver is, tell them to contact James Hsia. He is
a manager in 3Com's Ethernet board area, and he knows very well how
popular the packet drivers are.

True. But 3com 3+Open DOS clients can access 3+Share servers, and of course
you can run jbvb's dis_pkt.dos with that to give ncsa access to the ether.

Of course, the cost of buying 3+Open is a problem, but this may be a solution
for sites with transition problems.
