This is a summary of replies to my question about using PC-NFS and NCSA telnet. The conclusion was mostly - it generally works a bit, but does have problems. A copy of NCSA telnet 2.2TN/NFS-A is available for anonymous ftp from sulaw.law.su.OZ.AU, in the directory PC/pcnfs If you want the names of the respondents please mail me direct Chris ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- I just recently started using the Clarkson telnet package for PC-NFS in an attempt to get around a problem that I was having using Sun's telnet as well as to have a more useful version of telnet. It seems to work ok on my system, except when I try to use it with Desqview 2.37 and QEMM 5.0. Under QEMM and DV, no matter what I do, I always lock up my machine when I try to use telnet in a DV window. Then I must resort to a hard machine reboot. By the way, I am running PC-NFS 3.0.1a on a Zenith 386/25 under DOS 3.3+. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yo! I am running PC-NFS 3.0.1 with either 3com 3c501's or WD8003E |> The telnet randomly crashes - locking up totally to the point that a reset |> is the only solution. The lockups occur more frequently with more than one |> session open. |> Has anyone seen this problem and/or know of an answer. I've been running CUTE-2.2/NFS-A for quite a while, and I've decided I just have to live with the occasional crashes. They seem to most often come when the host is shooting over large quantities of material (and overflowing a buffer?) during large Tek plots or otherwise. I find if I avoid situations where the host wants to send a lot of data to the screen quickly, things go smoothly. Hope this helps. I'm waiting for CUTE-2.2D to be ported to the PC-NFS kernal, but the source code muck-up at Clarkson is delaying things considerably. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- >Is anyone else using the Clarkson University version of NCSA telnet >that is hacked for PCNFS. Yes we are using it. I was bound and determined to get the NCSA telnet to work on our PC-NFS system simply so I wouldn't have to use Sun's telnet. >I have been using it for a few weeks with PCNFS 3.1 and a NI5210 ethernet >card. We are using WD8003e clones and the coresponding driver. Are you using version 2.2TN/NFS-A? Yes, we are using it with no trouble at all. I have fallen in love with this version, though it does take a bit more memory. I have no idea what your trouble might be. [This respondent posted copies of configuration files that might help with] [problems. I will mail copies to anyone who asks. Chris] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Your experiences with CUTE2.2D/NFS is the same as ours. I use it all the time as I need both NFS and a better telnet but it can be very frustrating at times. Crashing is particularly evident when a lot of data arrives, possibly something to do with the scroll back mechanism. If I do a cat of /etc/passwd the chances are pretty good that I will crash the program. My cure has been to always use a pager if I can. Recent communication with Brad Clements, the author, have yielded no great joy. He has virtually given up on that particular version of the program until Sun do some serious work on the PC-NFS Toolkit. Sun, when I asked them in the US said that they are recommending that anyone that wants a good telnet should use Reflection 2 from Walker, Richer and Quin. It will run on top of the PC-NFS IP stack in addition to quite a few others. I haven't tried this out yet but I know from earlier experiences that the WRQ product is a pretty good emulator. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chris Hutchinson chris@sulaw.law.su.OZ.AU University of Sydney Law School Sydney
