[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] Poll: usefulness of ISO 8859-1 vs. IBM PC code table for 8-bit Telnet

jbvb-tmp@FTP.COM ("James B. Van Bokkelen") (01/18/91)

I opined that ISO 8859-1 was the right default character mapping for 8-bit
extended-Ascii support in an IBM PC Telnet (as opposed to just using IBM's
code points for the PC display and simply passing 8-bit characters straight
through). There's been disagreement about something I felt was pretty
straightforward, so I am polling people who actually use extended Ascii.
Send e-mail to the reply-to address above (not the list) answering the
following, and I'll summarize it later if people wish.

1. Which character mapping(s) are your extended-Ascii applications using:
US-style IBM PC, non-US IBM PC, 8859-1 (ISO Latin 1), other 8859 variant,
   something else?

2. Where did you obtain these applications: Operating system vendor,
other commercial software product, shareware developed elsewhere,
   locally developed?

3. Do the applications allow configuration of different extended-Ascii
character mappings? More than one at a time?
