[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] ppp ka9q question

gfoster@NXT19.DARPA.MIL (Glen Foster) (01/18/91)

Folks,

I am attempting to use the ppp version of ka9q (archived at ucdavis.edu) as
an IP router over a leased line between two ethernets, my problem:

FTP and Telnet sessions are routed fine from either side to the other and
ftp and telnet to the routers themselves works fine from both sides,
however an attempt to initiate an XWindows session through the routers dies
before full initiation with a "half-open connection" error. Is ka9q
inhibited about routing certain protocols by design, or am I doing
something stupid? Any ideas?

Configuration info:

Both routers configured similarly
12MHz 80286's
1 6.1 packet driver over wd8003e interface as pk0
1 ppp line w/HW F/C and both a/c and VJ compression turned on
running at 19,200bps into TB2500's running in V.32 mode w/o
  MNP nor compression as pp0

I am hoping that ka9q with header compression will give me better
throughput than the PCRoute-based router that is currently providing this
functionality (same AT's, same e-cards, same modems, same line). On that
subject, has anyone added VJ header compression to PCRoute yet?

Thanks for any help you can give me.
