I've successfully exported a directory from a Sun workstation to a PC. The directory is owned by root, but it's been chgrp'd to allow anyone from group X to write to it. From the Sun, this works: user y can write a file in that directory. From the PC, it doesn't (access denied). Why? Note also that it's user y who's mounted that directory on the PC. So I think I've narrowed the problem down to some kind of interaction between (PC?)NFS and Sun OS 4.1. I note that the manual says: "Certain operating systems do not properly recognize group permission settings. This has been observed with Ultrix 2.2 in particular." It's not clear from the wording if the problem is confined to NFS situations, but if so, is this another one of them? I really don't want, in fact can't (and really solve the problem), change the directory to be owned by user y, because I want user z to have write permissions in that directory as well. So what I really need is for group write permission to be recognized. Any insight into the problem would really be appreciated. -- Bitnet: pmrcjdb@uchimvs1 Internet: cjdb@midway.uchicago.edu
