[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] TCP/IP <--> IBM network

nanchen@uni2a.unige.ch (02/19/91)

Hello!

I've just a simple question: a friend of mine, who's working at IBM and uses
the IBM-network, wonders if there is a way for him to access this network we are
all using directly from his IBM-terminal (he's working in under VM/CMS and
MVS/TSO-E and uses IBMtype adresses: NAME at NODE)? How, if the physical link
between the two networks actually exists, should he write the adresses to be
understood by TCP/IP?

Does anybody know anything about this?

Joel (MARGOT@eldp.epfl.ch - I'm using a friend's account for posting this
letter).

There is a gateway between VNET and BITNET. It is a very restrictive linkage,
requiring the party from IBM to first establish a virtual circuit. The party
on BITNET then has to answer to firm up the virtual circuit. From then on,
communications is as per normal.

On the BITNET side, normally there is no restriction on who can connect to
VNET. However, on the VNET side, I believe IBM is very strict on which
employee can talk to the outside world. Anyway, the link is supposedly for
mutual research communications only. Recently though, I noticed that some
people from IBM are talking out through a node called IINUS1.IBM.COM.

To find out about the VNET/BITNET gateway, read the document VNETDOC LISTING
from BITNIC. Just go: TELL LISTSERV AT BITNIC SENDME VNETDOC LISTING ie if
you are working on VM.

2) I found (2) 8209's they appear not to be manfactured by IBM I would like t
   know who makes them for IBM?
3) Where can one get sample files for NETCUST SLIP and TOKEN if its supported
   using packet drivers
