[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] Mixing tcp/ip and novel drivers

schanin@oracle.com (Steve Chanin) (02/15/91)

Does anyone know of a driver which I can use to connect to both tcp/ip
networks and novell file servers? I have a compac 386/25 with a 3c503
card. Right now, our network is configured so that if I want to
print, I have to log into the novel servers (and get my lpt ports
remapped or use nprint). This requires that I load ipx. On the other
hand, if I want access to the unix boxes (for mail, etc), I need to
load a different packet driver (right now I use the one sold by TCP
associates). The problem is that if I load ipx and net4 (or xmsnet4)
to print or use the novell file servers I can't connect to any of the
unix machines without rebooting my pc (ipx won't unload). If I use
the tcp/ip packet driver, I can access the unix network, but I can't
print directly (I have to tell programs to generate postscript files
and then print these PS files through the unix system). Does anyone
know of a single driver that I could use for both purposes, so I
didn't have to keep rebooting my machine? Additionally, can I load it
into XMS with QEMM 5.1? Can I unload it (without rebooting) if I need
to?

Thanks,
Steve

Do you mean run tcp/ip applications like telnet and ftp at the same time
your PC is mounting Novell file space? This can be done by using the
packet driver and one of the tcp/ip packages that will use it. We have used
NCSA, FTP and U of M's tcp/ip packages while running Novell. You can use
other drivers and do that same.

Yes. Sounds like you haven't heard about BYU's Novell/packet-driver
client. It acts like any other Ethernet card, except that it uses
the packet driver installed on your machine. It's a good net neighbor,
and will happily share the driver with a TCP/IP package.

I don't know. Seems possible.

Can I unload it (without rebooting) if I need to?

Yes, see INSTALL.DOC in the 8.x packet driver distribution (was called
DRIVERS.DOC in 7.x).
