[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] Novell NE-2000 16-bit PC E-NET Board Questions

sward@cfa.HARVARD.EDU (Steve Ward, CF) (03/01/91)

Could someone briefly describe the programming model of
the Novell (and compatibles) NE-2000 16-bit PC Ethernet
controller board? I am aware it uses the National 8390
controller and I know basically how the 8390 works.
What I need to know is whether the NE-2000 uses both
8390 Local DMA and 8390 Remote DMA, where the local
DMA is to/from an onboard 16KB S-RAM buffer (what is
the base memory address if accessible at all from the bus?)
and where the Remote DMA is via bidirectional 16-bit
latches on the bus (what is the port(s) address?) Also,
what are the port addresses for the 8390 controller
itself, etc. Are IRQ interrupts used in conjunction with
the remote dma latches or are they polled or are they
accessed via pcbus dma or any one of the foregoing?

I have a technical reference for the 8390 chip so I do
not need any detailed tech. info on the controller chip
itself. I just need a basic description of the
implementation architecture along with pc bus interface
info. Thanks in advance for the help!
