[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] Linking two ethernet networks

NICKH@NOVSMTP.CALVIN.EDU (Nick Hengeveld) (03/08/91)

Greetings -

We are considering linking two ethernet networks together using leased lines
and are wondering what experience others have had doing the same. They are
separated by approximately 5 miles.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi,
We link ethernets together all of the time using routers and data circuits
leased from our local phone companies. It works well at a range of speeds
(9.6, 19.2, 56 and 1.5M). 9.6 and 19.2 are a little slow. 56K is OK for
many applications. 1.5M (T1) is good, but can be expensive both for the
data circuit and for the DSU/CSUs needed.
Are you talking about using routers (two separate ethernets linked
using the routers) or bridges (two ethernet segments that make a single
ethernet)? Bridges will work too, but there are a number of reasons to
keep from making a single ethernet too large.
