I have a few questions about the "Lantastic" packages that the local "car salesmen in a computer store" couldn't answer. What we need is a simple network to allow a 286 machine to boot, and mount the filesystem from a 386-based PC clone. Also, if the 286 could print on the printer attached to the 386, that would be great. Eventually, a Sun SPARCstation might show up, so "telnet" or even an NFS mount from the Sun would be nice. Also, we have some NE-1000-compatible ethernet boards stuck in the machines, doing nothing currently. Would Lantastic be a good starter network system for this setup? Can I buy a software-only version of lantastic to use our current network boards? If not, is the "2mb starter kit" compatible with ethernet boards? Does Lantastic know how to share a printer? Is this an added-cost feature? Does Lantastic know anything about NFS or Telnet? Would using lantastic preclude ever hooking up to the Sun? Are there any other peer-to-peer network systems that would work with this setup? How many systems does lantastic support on a network? Is there such things as "Gatorboxes" to allow connection to normal Sun-dominated newtworks from a Lantastic-dominated network? - ray@ziggy.ucsc.edu -
