[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] Packet Drivers V9 for 3c503 fails

ingea@IFI.UIO.NO (Inge Arnesen) (04/04/91)

I just dowloaded the Packet Drivers V.9 from sun.soe.clarkson.edu and
tried it out on our 3c503 cards, which is delivered with shared memory
disabled.

Packet Driver V.7, which is the current version we use, does not support
3c503 with shared memory disabled, which is rather annoying, since we have
SW that demands that shared memory is disabled. Everytime we used Packet
Driver, we had to open the PC's and restrap the 3c503 card.

The Packet Driver V.9 for 3c503 is supposed to support 3c503 with shared
memory disabled (using CPU i/o transfers to move frames - not DMA), but
after the first few receive interrupts from the card, the packet driver
freezes inside the ISR with interrupts disabled (effectivly stopping the
PC). Have anybody gotten PD V.9 for 3c503 to work with shared memory
disabled ??

Nope. As changes.doc says of the 8.x, "The 3c503 driver has some code
added to use the board in I/O-mapped mode. Unfortunately, there
wasn't time to get it working. It'll have to wait for the next
release."

Since the 9.x changes don't say anything, it's still true of the 9.x release.
Maybe I'll get it into the 10.x release...
