[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] legal status of PCroute

mah@dec1.wu-wien.ac.at (Michael Haberler) (04/10/91)

I heard that PCroute (written by Vance Morrison) is now owned by
LANport, a company in California.

We use some copies of PCroute at this University. Vance has not yet
answered my mail regarding the legal status of PCroute. I would have
have appreciated a notice to this newsgroup, or mail to those
people running PCroute.

Could someone shed more light on this situation?

About PCroute.
I was the one responsible for negotiating the PCroute deal with Northwest
University. I was Lanport's President at the time and am currently a
Director charged with major contract negotiations. I'm the marketeer-
businessman-deal maker of the outfit.

All worldwide rights to PCroute are the property of Lanport Inc. of
Pleasanton CA.

The company is enhancing PCroute to make it a commercial product. We are
interested in partner-ing with folks who have enhancments already. Mail me.

Existing users of PCroute are encouraged to register with Lanport for upgrade
info and support. There will be no licensing fee for the freeware versions
of PCroute. Only subsequent versions who's copywright reads "1991 Lanport
Inc." would be subject to a license fee.

Please note that existing versions were not public domain. They were fee
free copywright by Northwest University. As Lanport copywright existing
versions remain fee free.

We will make more announcements later see comp.dcom.lans.
Thanks

I don't know anything about the legal status of PCRoute, but I do know
that it came from *Northwestern* University, not `Northwest' University.
PCRoute was written by Vance Morrison while he was an employee of
Northwestern, specifically with ACNS, Academic Computing and Networking
Services. (BTW, I just checked a second ago and PCRoute is still available
via anonymous ftp from accuvax.nwu.edu, and none of the documentation has
yet been modified to indicate any change in copyright.)

P.S. I am not part of ACNS, just on the faculty; I only know enough about
all of this to set the name of the place straight :)
