Has anyone tried PC using NCSA Telnet to go through Appletalk to the FastPath gateway using the clarkson driver localtalk? I am having trouble doing it and could use some advice. Thanks. _________________________________ _____________________ |Nael Sabha | / ____________________ |Software Engineering Division | --- / / |Hughes Aircraft Co. | --- \ / / |Ground Systems Group, | \ \ / / |(nsabh%atr-2s@hac2arpa.hac.com)| \ \/ / ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ \/\/

The Clarkson LocalTalk packet driver is a class 5 (AppleTalk) driver only. Many TCP/IP software packages for the PC, including NCSA Telnet and Clarkson's CUTCP, do not support any classes other than class 1 (DIX Ethernet). There's a modified version of Phil Karn's ka9q mentioned in LOCALTLK.NOT that supports class 5, but being at a commercial site, you'd have to arrange for permission to use it. - Jim James Harvey, IUPUI Computing Services, IJAH400@IUPUI.EDU or HARVEY@INDIANA.EDU

I modified the localtlk.com & pcroute2.1 so that the it would *appear* to be a class 1 driver (of sorts) [ can you say hyper-hack?]. This has the advantage of being compatible with all these class 1 applications (have tested it with NCSA & FTP Software's pctcp) and it works OK. There are several disadvantages: 1) localtlk packets cannot be > 590 bytes, and since the drivers won't breakup/reconstruct packets, any IP packets > 580 or so gets dropped (still ok so long as you can specify the MTU in the application) 2) It is incompatible with other IP-encapsulated-Appletalk applications. 3) The dynamic IP allocation is really sick - this is due to the way pcroute cached the net address. If there is sufficient interest, I'll pretty up the changes and send it out. -- Roger Fujii - Media Cybernetics Phone: (301)495-3305 Internet: rmf%media@uunet.uu.net UUCP: {uunet,hqda-ai}!media!rmf
