[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] Adapters for Broadband Backbone?

J0S@psuvm.psu.edu (05/09/91)

I need to connect a PC to a broadband coax style backbone.
Management suggested a Hughes Probridge 8233 Bridge and
and an ethernet card for the PC. When I saw the price tags,
I knew I needed to look for other solutions.

Are you aware of any PC adapter cards that will directly
connect to this style of backkbone? If so, kindly post
the info.

Thanks, Jack Sharer, Penn State

Well,

It really matters how the ethernet traffic is being handled on the
broadband backbone. Unless you're using 10BROAD36 then you may not
have any alternatives. ( I assume that you want to communicate with
machines on an existing ethernet channel)

I'm not familiar with the Hughes system, so I don't know if it's
10BROAD36 compliant. Since most broadband ethernet products
"Do it our way" instead of conforming to any kind of standard, it's
very unlikely that anyone else will be compatabile with Hughes unless
 it's 10BROAD36 or MAP.

Even if the Hughes system is "standard" you must then be sure that
you order the proper TX and RX frequencies (assuming a single cable
system) to communicate with existing equipment. If you are planning
on installing a new "ethernet channel" be sure that you find out
what frequencies are in use on the existing system so you don't end
up ordering frequencies that collide with an existing broadband
service (Video,Audio,Point to Point data, etc.)
