[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] DIS_PKT v1.07

jrd@cc.usu.edu (05/20/91)

An improved version of DIS_PKT, v1.07, is now available via anonymous
ftp from my VMS VAX netlab.usu.edu 129.123.1.11 in directories
	[anonymous.netwatch] and [anonymous.novell]
as file DIS_PKT.TXT. This is a uuencoded file of a PKZIP archive, holding
a documentation file (with examples), the source file, and the executable.

DIS_PKT is a "shim" program which provides a Packet Driver interface
to applications programs while using the NDIS protocol multiplexer as the
effective Ethernet board. Version 1.07 solves a number of problems, most
importantly that it works around the, ahh "personality features" of 3Com 3C5xx
Ethernet boards. In addition, if the board is placed in Promiscuous mode
(Netwatch, Lanwatch, Beholder, etc) all other Packet Driver clients are
filtered in software to reject all but the kind of packets they expected to
receive; this reduces abuse of weak protocol stacks.
DIS_PKT worked satisfactorily in testing with AT&T EN100, 3C503, and
WD8003E Ethernet boards, running StarGROUP, NetWare shells, and Netwatch
simultaneously. The EN100 board can't do true promiscuous mode.
I would like to thank the many people who tested v1.06 and responded
with useful comments and sometimes much more.
