[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] WinQVTNet: Anonymous FTP, and a Short Wish List

barboni@sbcs.sunysb.edu (Carol Barboni) (05/23/91)

[ Lest there be any confusion here, I am posting this for a friend
who has read access to News, but cannot himself post thereunto: ]

I'm running version 1.65 of WinQVTNet. The other day, as I was
getting ready to shut windows down, I noticed on the QVTNet console
window that someone had FTP'd into my PC, under the anonymous ID, and
_had gotten in successfully_! I hadn't spent much time reading the
documentation on anonymous FTP, since I didn't want or need it, but
had assumed the anonymous FTP was disabled by default. Apparently, it
isn't. A further reading of the documentation reveals that I can
assign a default directory for anonymous users, that they can't CD
above, and that gives me some protection; but I can't seem to find any
mention of a way to disable anonymous users altogether. I even tried
putting an anonymous account, with password, in my password file with
PASSWD.EXE, but apparently QVTNet processes the anonymous login
without consulting this file. I also tried assigning anonftp_dir a
bogus value (nul, a non-existent directory, etc.; I know, probably a
silly thought, but I was graping for a solution :-) ), but all that
did was cause QVTNet to act as though anonftp_dir had not been set at
all. Does anybody else know of a way to do this?

While I'm here, a few items I've thought of for the QVTNet wish list:
I'd like to see the console display the IP address (at least) of the
originator of PINGs, FTPs, etc. It would also be nice (although I
wonder about the overhead) if the FTP server would log a bit more
information than just login and logoff; I'd like to see what files
were transferred, etc. A pause capability, in the style of the scroll
lock key in NCSA Telnet, would also be handy; ^S/^Q don't seem to work
reliably across the network (in this or any other Telnet package).

One last thing, in the nature of a possible bug: has anybody noticed
that when you run a telnet session and an FTP client session, that
while the FTP client is transferring a file, certain keystrokes in the
telnet session (specifically, for me, CR and BS) get sent up to the
host twice? Sounds goofy, but happens consistanly every time I
transfer a file with the FTP client.

Thanks for listening, and for any help you folks can provide.

Danny
