[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc] Network Mail Questions

RWMIRA01@ulkyvx.BITNET (Rob Miracle) (06/13/91)

I am seeking some information on Mail Handling. Here is our setup:

Clients: MS-DOS, w/ AT&T StarGROUP 3.4 LanManager and DIS_PKT.DOS Packet
driver. CUTCP or NCSA Telnet as the TCP/IP software. PMXStarMail is also
available.

Servers/Hosts: AT&T SVR3.2.2 Unix w/Wollengong TCP/IP and StarGROUP 3.3
LanManager Server (2 network cards). TCP/IP access to the rest of ethernet and
CU/UUCICO over StarLAN to other AT&T Unix boxes.

AT&T SVR3.2.2 w/ StarGROUP 3.2 and PMXStarMail post office. CU/UUCICO to other
AT&T boxes.

DEC Ultrix UUCICO and TCP/IP. Also the Nameserver and most likely will be the
mail router.

Goals: Have a client on their PC read and send mail using Internet style
addresses to other clients on our ethernet and eventually to Internet with
minimal investment in software.

Now the PMX StarMAIL works great from the Client over ISO to the Server. I can
send mail from one Unix box via UUCP to the postoffice server and it will beep
my PC telling me I have mail. In theory, I can then send it to the server
running both protocol stacks and have it forward mail out of the StarLAN loop.

I would like to have a program that uses SMTP that the client could run on the
PC periodially or sit in the background of a windows session that would monitor
the Mail Server for incomming mail and allow them to send mail on demand. The
Name server will have the IP addresses of each desktop machine.

I would like to be able to type MAIL at my DOS prompt and have it do its thing.

Does any one have any suggestions on where to proceed? I have a C compiler for
all machines in the loop if Source is available.

Thanks in advance
Rob
