Generally I prefer to maintain my distance in these matters, however, the nature of the attack against RMS and his philosophy was such that I wanted to make a comment. The tone is set in the first paragraph where Templeton says >Indeed, let the people decide about GNU. I don't say it's certain >that GNU will not do good. It could very well. But I made my statements >in the light of some important facts. The reference to facst suggests that an objective discourse follows, however, this was decidedly not the case. (i) RMS is a fanatic comunist (ii)Public domain software is (by definition?) inferior to what we pay for. (iv)Quality is inconsistent with softwares being free. While these points might raise some interesting questions they are in no way adressed by Templeton; it seems that his primary concern is with people giving away the commodity that he would like to sell. While I can understand his feelings in this matter, I am also very glad that people such as RMS can still be found. I suspect that if all creation were market driven we would live in a much less interesting world. les Clowney
