[comp.sys.mac.hypercard] "Open" command

mschuck@watdcsu.waterloo.edu (Mary Margaret Schuck - SD) (01/15/88)

I have been having a particular problem with the 'open'
command in scripts. I can't open files from within
the scripts. If I type the selfsame command into
the message box it works, but both embedding the
complete name in the script or asking for it and
using it from the variable (with quotes added) fails.
I always get a dialog box asking where to find the
file (even if the path was embedded as well).

This is only a problem with documents produced with
other applications--opening the applications themselves
is no problem. Somewhat ironically, where

	open ":applications:Macwrite"

will work,

	open ":correspondence:letter" with ":applications:Macwrite"

can't find the letter OR Macwrite.

I have up to date Documents and Applications cards in my Home stack,
which it appears to be ignoring entirely. (Even applications won't
open unless I specify the complete path.)

Has anyone encountered this or similar problems? Am I doomed to
forever open Macwrite and THEN open the file I want?

Thanks in advance for the help.
