I had annoying squeaks coming out of a DaVong 5Mb hard disk I had a few years back. Since it was under warranty, I had the girl at ComputerLand call DaVong to find out what to do. Here is what they said, and I have done this several times on my XT as well: Remove the disk drive from the PC. Look on the bottom side of the drive, at the lower PC board (you have to look sideways at the disk to see the circuit board). There is an "arm" which rests against what looks like a ball bearing in about the middle of the board. Stick something in there, gently pulling the arm away from the ball bearing, and squirt a little oil on the ball bearing. You will probably need a little flashlight to see what you are doing, and maybe even a second hand. Note that this arm and ball bearing are external to the drive. I did this twice on the DaVong, I have done it 3 times (in two years) on my personal XT (which is to say I trust it), and several people with XT's at work have done the same. Just don't overdo the oil. I used WD-40 with the red tubular extender nozzle. If you are a real klutz, you had better let someone do this for you.

We always used graphite lubricants on our carriage slides. I don't whether it makes a difference, but I get paranoid about oils near disks. Charley Wingate umcp-cs!mangoe
