I picked up a copy of the second issue of Hyperage and a copy each of the two hyperlink issues at hyperExpo. Hyperage and Hyperlink are both new magazines (2 issues each so far) devoted to Hypertext/card. I picked up the first issue of Hyperage at the last Jan. MacWorld Expo. Soon after there was some speculation as to wheather or not there would be a second issue. But May -June, 1988 issue #2 is out. Anyway, after sitting down with two issues of each magazine back to back, I have some observations that i would like to share. Hyperlink magazine- A bimonthly, with a newstand price of $4.95. Issue 2 is 62 pages long. Hyperlink magazine seems to be devoted to the Hypercard product only. Each issue is availible with a companion disk ($14.95 for the issue # 2 companion disc). The magizine seems to exist primarily to teach hypertalk scripting by providing examples and explaining how the scripts work and to provide scripts. The magazine is essentually a script dump and screen dumps of the stacks in the companion disc. There are explanations as to how the stacks work and the normal magaziney column and letters to the editors. It provides everything that you would need to faithfully recreate the stacks in the companion disc if you are heavy on time and light on cash to purchase the companion disk. Issue #2 contains build it youself instructions for 3 stacks, an excerpt from danny Goodman's upcoming book (Danny Goodman's hypercard Developer's Guide),Reviews of Reports & hyperCONTROL, two hypercard print extender utilities, and columns on Xcomands, and scripting how to dos. If you are looking for a magazine to teach you how to script and expose you to other people's scripts This may be the one for you. HyperLink Magazine, PO Box 7723, Eugine Or. 97401 Subscription for magazine only $25/year, with companion disc, $67.95/year HyperAge magizine- it says under the title "The journal of hyperThinking" A bimonthly, with a newstand price of $3.95. Issue #2 has 56 pages. As the title implies, this magazine is not limited to Hypercard but addresses anything having to do with Hypertext, with an empthsis on Hypercard. this magazine gets into hypertext philisophies as well as how to do its.The articals in volume #2 include, an artical by Doug Englebart 'A conceptual framework for the argument for the augmentation of man's intellect" part two of "Interactive sound with Hypercard", "Hypermedia amd expert systems", a review of macrecorder, and article on creating interactive video programs with hypercard and a product comparison of guide 2.0 and hypercard 1.1. Regular columns include a script clinic by Mitchell Waite, a column by ted Nelson (!), and "Inigo's Comic Strip by Amanda Goodenough (YAH!). It looks like HyperAge is trying to achieve a balance of media philosiphy, product reviews, hypermedia and hypercard. There is some solid Hyperscript how to do it information, but teaching hyperscripting is not the empthsis of the magazine. HyperAge Magazine,The journal of hyperThinking, 5793 Tyndall Ave. Riverdale, New York 10471-2113. $19.95/ year(USonly, Canada add $5, all other countries add $10 US) Both magazines are compilemtry with differnt empithis. Personally, I get lots of stacks from lots of sources and can run my own script dumps. my money goes for hyperAge to help broaden my understanding of what Apple and all the hypercard hoopla brough to my attention.
