[comp.sys.mac.hypercard] Values returned from SEND

Currently the SEND command is used to get around the standard search path
when determining what Hypercard entity (button, card, bkgnd, etc.) will
receive a message.  However, the use of SEND is limited to sending MESSAGES,
which by definition will not return values.  Is there any way, other than
the rather ugly "define a global variable to use for returning stuff"
to invoke a FUNCTION out of the normal search path? (By the way, you can't
do a function directly using the global variable - you must define a method,
and just "know" that it will return a value).
It's very annoying to not be allowed to get a value back from a SEND without
a big kludge.
