My office is thinking of buying a Mac II for a new consellor who just started working with us. I'll be supporting her, but I know almost nothing about Macs. One thing I'll have to do is write a database. From the little I've heard about Hypercard, it looks *very* interesting. How is Hypercard itself for database programming ? At this point, I don't need a multi-user system, but I do need simple reporting with basic statistics (like frequency counts by data fields.) Another probably need is generating mailing lists... The database will be something like this. 1) An area to hold student information (name, idnumber, address, date of birth, etc) 2) An area to hold a stack of information, like indivdual test scores in a course, with course name, semester course was taken, date of test, and test score. So I envision one group of records for each student to hold this kind of data. 3) An area (stack) to contain general notes (note pad) which can be dated (per student record.) 4) An area to hold appointments with the student in question. This part should have two views, one from a students view (a list of his appointments with the user of this database) and the other from the users view (a counselor). She should be able to look at a day and see all her appointments... (This all should be databook/calendar type format) These four areas should be linked and it should be easy to move from one to another. The database should be easily modifiable. By this I mean, adding new stacks. Alot of the data I can get from other electronic sources; Does Hypercard have an 'inport' facility ? I need basic reporting by data fields, like average test score, by course, or semester, or a list of students who have this value in this field, etc... Also, the database will be sizable as and will get larger as time goes on because old data will not be removed from the system. Will Hypercard handle this easily or should I buy another database package ? John A. Potelle POTELLE@MAINE.BITNET
