[comp.sys.mac.hypercard] Disappearing Mouse!

yvo@cs.utexas.edu (Yvonne van Olphen) (01/25/89)

This is probably old news and I'm way behind (as usual), but I just
tried running HyperCard version 1.0.1. on my Mac II (which is
currently using System 6.0.2). Every time the mouse pointer crosses
over the HyperCard window, it disappears (no cute little hand, no
nothing). Do I need a newer version of HyperCard, or what?

HyperCard is currently at version 1.2.2 (and counting). Sagens of bugs have been fixed since 1.0.1. Your friendly neighborhood computer store or local user group will upgrade your version for no charge; just bring in your original disks (and perhaps a few blank ones).

The problem is rooted in a font conflict. HyperCard's cursors (the hand
and the various paint cursors) are stored as characters in a font that
the HyperCard application contains. If the ID of this font is the same
as the ID of a font installed in the system, weirdness results.

The fix is to give HyperCard's font its own FOND resource (which is used
by the system to mediate font ID conflicts). The procedure: launch Font/DA
Mover. Holding down the option key, click the open button (this lets you
access fonts from any file). Locate and open HyperCard. Move the font
into another (new) suitcase document. Then move it back to HyperCard.
This will bestow a FOND on the font, and should eliminate ID problems.
(IMPORTANT: as with any resource modification, do this to a COPY of
the HyperCard application.)

One important thing to remember if you are using Reports! though:
According to MEDIAGENIC, Reports! will __NOT__ work with HyperCard
version 1.2.2. They say they will have a fix "real soon now"
