[comp.sys.mac.hypercard] Checking for the existence of a file

Does anyone know a good way to check to see if a file exists,
and then based on the result, create a new file, or open the
old one?

My primary application is to tie documents to applications
(e.g. Word). The idea is to allow me to open a document,
and if it does not exist, a empty document will be created
and the application will use that.
