I may have found a problem with HyperCard and Aufs (CAP File server). Somewhere it says that searching is faster if you compact a stack two or three times (no I can't find the reference - probably on the Net), so I've always done this, until... If I compact a stack that resides on an Aufs file-server more than once, it gets corrupted. Sometimes it takes three of four goes. A "null" stack - "New Stack" without anything on it, fails with a "File System error -39 while reading from the disk" - End of File. This stack is normally 4896 bytes long after a good compaction. After a bad one, it is 2560 bytes long, so no wonder it got EOF. The Home Stack, 19264 bytes compressed, ends up at 12609, complaining that it "Can't find card or background id nnnn". I've tried brand new copies of Home and HyperCard, both 1.1 and 1.2.2, running on Plus's and SE's with different O/S versions. I've run this test on two different Sun 3/50's on different sites, both with CAP 5.0 Patch level 6. Could others please test this (carefully) so as to help isolate the problem. --------- Tom Evans tom@wcc.oz | Webster Computer Corp P/L | "The concept of my 1270 Ferntree Gully Rd | existence is an Scoresby VIC 3179 Australia | approximation" Australia | 61-3-764-1100 FAX ...764-1179 | D.
