[comp.sys.mac.hypercard] Need Info on Uses of Sound

sdm@cs.brown.edu (Scott Meyers) (09/08/89)

I'm taking a graduate seminar on user interface technology this semester,
and I'd like to get information on uses of audio and video in interfaces.
I'm not a hypercard user myself, but I know that hypercard provides hooks
for audio and video capabilities, and I'm interested in finding out how
these capabilities are being used or could be used.

It's not difficult to imagine straightforward applications such as playing
back prerecorded sounds or images, but I'd like to hear about less
commonplace ideas. For example, I can think of various possibilities for
sound as an output device: monitoring the background load by changing the
volume (or pitch or whatever) as the load changes, announcing the arrival
of new mail by making some kind of noise (possibly influenced by
characteristics of the mail, e.g., who it's from, what the subject is,
etc.), profiling the resource usage of a program by adjusting the sound to
indicate how much of a resource is being used, etc. I'm sure there are
similar applications of video, although I have to confess to being short of
ideas in this arena.

If you have any ideas or experiences you'd be willing to share with me, I'd
love to hear them. They need not be limited to hypercard. Since I don't
subscribe to this newsgroup, please reply to me directy via email.

Thanks,

Scott Meyers
