> re: comp.os.mac versus comp.sys.mac.os versus ...? actually, I also dislike the "os"-nomer because a) it's not really an OS in the traditional sense b) actually we'd want to include more than just MacOS topics :-) c) a name that is more intuitive as to what is appropriate here is needed ... so I'd like to suggest for discussion: comp.sys.mac.sysf (sysf to hint at System Folder - and I'd actually like to see all sub-groups of comp.sys.mac come out with 4-letter names somehow, and nothing longer unless it ABSOLUTELY is necessary) > re: comp.sys.mac.virus I STRONGLY support the suggestion for a group like that and I'd think it would be most effective if it was moderated so that the volume would always be kept low and duplication, speculation, and misinformation kept to a minimum - which would also ensure that everyone with a Mac stays subscribed to it. I wished I could think of a 4-letter acronym though. maybe comp.sys.mac.viri (which is the Latin plural for virus, I believe) could find acceptance as it would hardly confuse anyone ... change of topic: I'd also find the concept of a moderated group called comp.sys.mac.announce interesting which could have a similar relief-effect as news.announce.news-groups had for readers who were relieved to unsubscribe news.groups except on occasions where an interesting announcement tempted to resubscribe to follow a particular discussion thread. In this csm.announce one could post things such as: a) an (weekly/monthly?) index of articles in comp.binaries.mac and comp.sources.mac, maybe even an index of traffic in the other csm.* groups, pointers to MAC-related discussions in other news-groups (there are MAC-related discussions outside the csm-hierarchy occassionally which are highly interesting) b) a digest of advice/hardware/software wanted (or even for sale if there is interest and demand and a volunteer to compile those things) - anyway, something that allows people to calmly hit "c" on other groups in csm.* during busy periods, while still having the feeling to "kind of keep in touch with things" by reading csm.announce ... c) articles posted at regular intervals indicating - the archive-sites - an index of what's stored and what's new on archive sites - sites with file-servers (email) and an index of files archived and new there plus instructions on how to request them. One might even move the posting of the INFO-MAC digests to this group (btw, I forget if chuq in his proposal even mentioned what should be done with csm.digest; I guess leaving it like and where it is is the default action for anything Chuq didn't explicitly address, and that's just fine with me). Last, one might consider a group csm.announce.newusers and/or csm.newusers (with the same logic that saw the groups news.announce.newuser and news.newusers.questions created - basically to provide a organized flow of important information to newusers through the announce-group and give neophytes a group to post in while keeping the other groups from getting swamped) so, to sum this up (phew, are you still with me? obviously, you are...:-) comp.sys.mac.sysf - (rather than csm.os) as group-name for discussions related to files you put into the System Folder comp.sys.mac.viri - (rather than csm.virus) a moderated group for articles regarding worms, viri and other computer ailments. comp.sys.mac.announce - a moderated group for "quality articles" (hey, not everything I write would deserve going there :-) summaries, indices, TOCs, virus-alarms, etc... comp.sys.mac.announce.newusers - information and summaries of the wisdom of old hands to help neophytes to come up to speed (and avoid repetition and raise the news-value of discussions in other groups) (I wished I could think of a 4 letter word to replace "announce" :-) comp.sys.mac.hyca - (rather than comp.sys.mac.hypercard) and if demand and traffic seems to justify, create subgroups *.misc, *.xcmd, *.user, *.prod (for discussion and questions regarding "programs" running on top of Hypercard) and whatever anyone else can think of once and for all. given that I think that this is a significant addition (if not alteration) of Chuq's original proposal, I cross-posted this to comp.sys.mac and comp.sys.mac.hypercard with follow-ups once again directed to news-groups only. Please (re)subscribe to news.groups for the duration of this discussion-thread and give your feedback.
