[comp.sys.mac.hypercard] System requirements for HyperCard 2.0

huub@phoibos.cs.kun.nl (Huub van Thienen) (07/04/90)

I tried to buy HC 2.0 (at least I want to have it as soon as it
arrives from Apple), but my local Apple dealer refused to sell it. In
stead they tried to sell me HC 1.2.x (which is indeed a later version
than my somewhat obsolete HC 1.0.1). Their argument was that HC 2.0
does not work with system 6.0.3 (the system I am currently running).
It would require system 6.0.5. or later (is there a later version?)
They would not sell me system 6.0.5 either, saying tht it would take
"major upgrades" (whatever that may mean) in the rest of my software.

I don't believe anything of what the said. They are just trying to get
rid of their old stock of HC 1.2.x packages. I have a few questions
about it, and I hope there are some informed people out there in
NetLand that can answer them:

1) Is it true that HC 2.0 requires system 6.0.5 and will not work with
6.0.3? (Neither the original press release nor any of the follow ups
made any reference to this.)

2) Is it really so hard to upgrade from system 6.0.3 to 6.0.5?

Any information on the subject will be appreciated. Thanks for
helping.

No! Get yourself a free upgrade direct from Apple 8^) *claps* *claps* *claps*
*claps* Anonymous FTP to Apple.COM and the 6.0.5 system software is under
/pub/dts/sw.license directory. Below is the (sort of) snapshot of the
directory.

Notice the size of each file! Those 605i-xxx is imaged file generated from
DiskCopy so you will need to get diskcopy-4-1.hqx and have floppies ready for
de-image (or un-image, sp?) after you de-BinHex (or un-BinHex, more sp?). So
have much, much disk spaces ready! And don't forget the last file, you are
required to get it and read it (eventhough you don't have to sign, seal, and
deliver to Apple 8^) ).

Yes, HyperCard 2.0 requires 6.0.5 -- it will not launch under 6.0.3,
guaranteed.

Mixed reactions to this -- a lot has happened in system software between
those versions. Chances are pretty high that you should (have to) upgrade
some of your applications to their latest versions. I think you should pin
down your dealer and get him/her to clearly state all the problems
incurred by upgrading to 6.0.5 -- seems like the dealer is trying to pull
a fast one on you.

Sure looks that way. However, if your dealer refuses to give you a
system software upgrade, they are violating their agreement with Apple
and could be risking the termination of that agreement. You might want
to mention that to them, and if not, mention it to Apple.

I am currently using the beta test version of Hypercard 2.0 and
find that it works perfectly well with 6.0.4 I decided not to upgrade to
6.0.5 on my IIcx because I had heard that the only things added/changed in
6.0.5 were for the portable or the IIfx. Apparently 6.0.5 has been causing
a lot of trouble so I am glad I did not switch. To be fair however, my
preliminary documentation says "HyperCard 2.0 requires Macintosh System
Software version 6.0.5 or A/UX 2.0 or later." I also may not have had
trouble with 2.0b25 because I have not found it yet. Anyway, to
Mr. van Thienen, I can only say that your dealer is a money-grubbing
slimeball. I would find another dealer if I were you.

There were also some bugs fixed in 6.0.5 that affect every machine (such as
the Sound Manager, TextEdit and 800K Disk eject patch). I've found a lot of
software that had problems under 6.0.4 that work find under both 6.0.3 AND
6.0.5. I suggest upgrading anyway to 6.0.5. There are a lot of benefits
and VERY few, if not no, detriments to upgrading to 6.0.5.

One detriment for SE/30 users should be mentioned:

If you have a second monitor that you assign the menu bar to,
and put your Finder windows on the SE/30 screen, those windows will
be unreachable if you disconnect the 2nd monitor. I have a color monitor
at home, and often carry my machine to work. Losing those Finder
windows can be very frustrating. Under 6.0.4, the machine is smart
enough to realize that the windows cannot be located and just gives me
a default window in the middle of the screen. Why this intelligence is
lost in 6.0.5 is beyond me. Needless to say, I will not upgrade to
6.0.5!
