I'm looking for an 8086 assembler that runs under Unix that generates PLINK-compatible object files. We're using the Lattice cross-compiler for our development and Lattice totally ignores assembly. tnx, /rich$alz Mirror Systems {decvax!genrad!mit-eddie, ihnp4!inmet, wjh12} !mirror!rs

Xenix for the PC-AT has a cross compiler, assembler, and linker for DOS programs. The compiled code is significantly tighter than Lattice - it should touch off a round of competetive improvements in code generation. The assembly language interface differs from Lattice in obvious (calling conventions) and obscure (group and offset usage) ways. If you can tolerate the following bugs, this might fill your needs: - Assembler lacks macros and structures - Large model very buggy - Several bugs affecting small model programs - Major bugs in the library - Many bugs affecting the operating system especially - Backup problems (dump/resotr) - Crashes These bugs were reported to IBM and Microsoft *many* times since 12/84. One OEM told me he had reported some of the same bugs to Microsoft about a year ago. Needless to say, none of these have been fixed, or I wouldn't be mentioning them. A "maintenance disk" was promised for early April, but hasn't been seen as of May 4. -- Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX ..!tektronix!reed!omen!caf Omen Technology Inc 17505-V NW Sauvie IS RD Portland OR 97231 Voice: 503-621-3406 Modem: 503-621-3746 (Hit CR's for speed detect)
