[net.micro] Perils of Public Domain Software - Part 3 - A Happy Ending

drs@bnl.UUCP (David R. Stampf) (05/05/85)

I'm sorry that this took so long to get out, but just as I
found the solution we switched from our 11/44 to a Vax. Then, with the
usual startup problems, it seemed destined not to see the light of day.
This is the message that I tried to send.

When we last left our poor suffering programmer...

I think I found the solution to FTP-ing the PC-WRITE program
and assorted utilities from UTEXAS-20. First of all - BEWARE!!! - this
was discovered by trial and error - it works from that system to a PDP
11/44 running version 7 of unix. I don't know if it will work for you.
(Last week in PC-Digest was a step by step procedure for "novices" to
follow, which would not work for me, so you will have to experiment.

First, you must send the command "tenex", then the command
"quote type L 8". The second command sets up for 8 bit transfer, the
first includes the carriage returns. Omitting either command is
a fatal (at least for your monitor) error.

I wish there was a decent description of all of this. If you
know of any, how about posting it to the net? The procedure I followed
originally was one that had worked for me on a number of different systems
in the past (HARVARD, COLUMBIA, SIMTEL, ISIB etc.) and I had no reason to
believe that UTEXAS was any different.

Thanks to all of you who wrote with suggestions and offers to
send me PC-WRITE. I hope the program is just as friendly. (To those who
believe software can't kill hardware -- believe it - especially on the PC!)

P.S.
In the past week or so I have used PC-WRITE - Its nice, but I think
I'll stick with Mince.
