[net.micro] Intel's 80188

cem@intelca.UUCP (Chuck McManis) (05/09/85)

As Systems Validation Engineer for the 80186/188 I am responsible for
extensively testing the CPU in a "systems" environment as well as
tracking down those somewhat elusive problems that are not obviously
misinterpretation of the documentation and that would seem to be "bugs"
in the part. When the variety of the systems is high, as is the case
with the 80186, and there are no reports of problems, I interpret this
to mean that either there are no bugs, or that the ones that there may
be are very obscure and no one has seen them yet. (It is so difficult
to say without reservation, "There is absolutely no error or bug in this
very complicated part.") Unfortunately, it seems everyone who is using
the 80188 is using it as a controller. Since we really would like to
track some systems that use the HLL features like ENTER, LEAVE and the
various hardware and software interrupts etc, if you know of someone
using it in such a way, please have them send me a note with a brief
description of the application. If the application covers some aspects
of the part that we are not currently covering, such as using an 8087
with the 80188 (yes you can do it, just put the 82188 protocol
translator between the 8087 and the CPU), we would like to offer
them the opportunity to be a beta site. Finally, I am not looking for
proposals for applications, I am looking for existing applications that
either have hardware already built or will have very soon.
