Does anyone have experience with Reports 2.0? Has anyone received their upgrade? (If so, what was included and what version of HC did you receive with it)? Thanks -Mike

Reports 2.0 came with HC 2.0v2. I find it indispensable for commercial applications. -- Jim Russell, Jim.Russell@f421.n109.z1.fidonet.org via The Black Cat's Shack's FidoNet<->Usenet Gateway blkcat.fidonet.org and Fidonet 1:109/401

Reports 2.0 is a complete rewrite to Reports 1.2.X. It is now sold directly by Nine to Five Software and is no longer handled by Activision. It includes HyperCard 2.0v2, a Home Stack and some example stacks and reports. It also includes "MasterView" which is a new product that allows you create simple row and column displays of the information in your stacks. MasterView also allows you to edit your HyperCard fields directly in MasterView and then optionally save the changes back to HyperCard, MasterView or both. Reports 2.0 and MasterView are both fully compatible with HyperCard 1.2.X and HyperCard 2.0 Reports 2.0 & MasterView now run directly on top of HyperCard instead of being independent applications. This makes the overall response times much quicker and allows for more interaction with HyperCard. The entire system installs only 5K of external commands into HyperCard! The primary interface to Reports 2.0 is now handled through a single floating palette, but all of the controls available on the palette are accessible through HyperTalk scripts, so the interface can be completely customized. (No more "Report Card"!) Other new features include: Multiple break sections Support for color printing Increased search and sort speeds (about 100 cards/sec. on Mac II's or better) Data format options (Dollar signs, Percent signs, etc.) New script handlers Ability to print from more that one background Reports 2.0 is only available through Nine to Five Software at this point. So, how's the interface? When I used Report 1.* I found it very easy and comfortable to make the report-templates, but I had big problems with the so called "Report Card": I newer managed to print a report from within a script without use of that card.

TO:FVERNON@CUDNVR.DENVER.COLORADO.EDU Noticed your pitch re Reports 2.0 -- I think I had replied to the original message also, but I just told them it was good and they needed it! We got an upgrade from you the other day, and see that a problem with numberFormat got blamed on HC 2.0. Was that the problem we were struggling with? The Reports 2.0 interface has been improved substantially. The Reports card is gone*, and has been replaced with an icon that presents a palette that is used to select, update, and run reports, and even lets the user navigate the cards that were selected for the report. The Nine To Five folks blamed the Reports card approach on Activision, and they included the Reports button in version 1.2.2 that was much better. (Use the script from that button as a model if you want to run reports in the earlier versions without bothering with the Reports card.) *The first thing you want to do when you convert a stack to HV 2.0 and Reports 2.0 is to get rid of the reports card -- trying to run a 1.2.2 report on a stack converted to 2.0 is _very_ likely to corrupt and ruin your stack! It seems the NineToFive folks have provided enough hooks to ensure that there is nothing (other than report definition) that you can't do entirely from within scripts - the button and palette are never required if you choose to not use them. The only downsides that I have found so far are: 1. You can no longer print the layout defnition. 2. You can have only one report definition open at a time. 3. The use of the debugger is not documented, and while you can use it (a _huge_ improvement over 1.2.2!) you do need to be careful to close the script window before a rerun or your changes will not take effect and you will drive yourself crazy wondering why your fixes seemed to have no effect. I've gotten in to the habit (using a 9" screen, of always checking the menu to see if any other windows are open before I rerun a report. 4. Reports still appropriates the card script when it runs -- you can no longer execute any handlers at the card script level when you run, and if you are unlucky, you can lose your card script as you test and update. I won't list all the improvements, but they are substantial. -- Jim Russell, Jim.Russell@f421.n109.z1.fidonet.org via The Black Cat's Shack's FidoNet<->Usenet Gateway blkcat.fidonet.org and Fidonet 1:109/401
