[net.micro] more than 2 hard disks for pc/xt ??

misha@daisy.UUCP (Mike Umansky) (05/10/85)

Hi. I need help from netland!!
I have a PC/XT with two floppies and a 46MB ATASI hard disk split up
into two logical partitions of 20MB each (formatted). That means
that drive letters A: and B: apply to floppies and letters C: and D:
apply to the two logical partitions of the hard disk, which looks like
two physical drives to DOS. I would like to connect another hard disk
since only one half of my controller is used. But as I was told, I need
to install a custom driver to be able to access the second physical drive
with letters above D: (i.e., E: or F: or ....). This is where I need help.
Can someone out there please tell me if there is a way to patch current
DOS system so that it can access letters above D: and how to do it.
OR, does anyone know where to get such a driver (source preferably).
I am fairly new to PC-DOS and I won't be able to write a driver on my own
for quite a while, so any help will be greatly appreciated.
I thank in advance all who will even consider reading this cry for help!!!

I am at home writing this, so bear with me. If I remember correctly, DOS 2.10
didn't stop at drive D:. I had my PC-XT configured thru F:. But, I have the
XT configured for 4 floppy drives, even tho I am only using 2. The operation
manual only shows the positions for 1 and two drives, but the other two
binary positions are for 3 and four drives. Look at the DOS manual about
drive letters.

Now, DOS 3.10, which I am currently using, can support more dive letters.
There is even a DOS command to set the max drives. I would suggest getting
DOS 3.10 for all the extra commands and the improved BACKUP, which allows
you to backup to any type of drive. That will allow hard disk to hard disk
type backups, which 2.10 didn't allow.

I hope this helps a little bit. I know it isn't much. If you don't have
DOS 3.10 (or anyone else with an XT), you should look into getting it.
