[comp.sys.mac.hypercard] Changing the Report Header font?

smith@coral.bucknell.edu (Greg Smith) (04/02/91)

I have HyperCard 2.0 (just the version that comes with our new Macs) on System
6.0.7. I'll be printing reports to a StyleWriter with TrueType, so I picked
the TrueType fonts for all the fields in my report. Now that I'm ready to
print, I typed in some header information and fired off my report. The body of
the report looks great, but the header doesn't look too good, since it appears
to be using Geneva instead of Helvetica. Can some kind soul tell me how to
switch which font HC 2.0 will use for report headers? I can't seem to find a
way to do it... :-( (I'd prefer a way to select the font as opposed to
loading up the 4x fonts for Geneva et al. I know I can use 4x bitmap fonts to
improve the print quality; I'm just being stubborn about making my System file
even bigger than it already is!)

Thanks in advance!

Greg Smith

Yeah, that works well for the LaserWriter driver. Unfortunately, the
StyleWriter driver has no such capability. Sigh. Looks like I'm going
to have to bite the bullet and dig out a mega-Geneva font from somewhere,
unless someone can tell me where to find a TrueType version of Geneva for
no money.

I think the stack gods here have already agreed that this cannot be
done in HyperCard 2. However, if you check "Font Subsitution" in the
Page Setup dialog, you should at least get Helvetica for the Geneva.
(I haven't used TrueType, but this has certainly worked with Adobe
fonts.)

Unfortunately there is no way in HyperCard 2.0 or 2.0v2 to change the
report header font, size or style.

Exclaimer!!! I never said it...Nobody heard me say it...You can't prove
anything!

No kidding. Well, I'm surprised. I use a DeskWriter, and its driver
supports Font Substitution, so I never expected that StyleWriter
wouldn't. That seems like a major oversight on Apple's part,
especially given that SW is supposed to be DW's competition. Sorry it
didn't help.

Rats. I was afraid that was the answer. Will it be possible in 2.1? Will I
be able to do font substitution when version 1.1 of the StyleWriter driver
comes out? When will StyleWriter 1.1 come out? Even using a 4x Geneva font
doesn't look all that good on my StyleWriter. I have to admit that this is a
very disappointing situation. Apple advertised Laser Quality output with the
StyleWriter, but Apple only gave me four TrueType fonts and now an Apple
(Claris) product is thwarting my attempts to print my report. (I imagine that
the other non-PostScript printers suffer from this same problem when dealing
with HC reports.) Would it be possible for Apple to make a TrueType Geneva
available for anonymous FTP and on AppleLink? At least a TrueType Geneva would
solve the problem of applications specifying Geneva (a standard Mac font for
text) and not providing a way to switch (I'm sure HC 2.0 isn't the only
culprit; it's just the one annoying me at the moment). Aside from being locked
into Geneva for this header, I'm absolutely thrilled with my StyleWriter; the
low speed doesn't bother me and the output quality is fantastic!
