A brilliant name! Wish I had thought of it. I trust that this is sufficiently obscure. /Steve Dyer decvax!wivax!dyer

This is (I promise!) my last word on the subject for a while, until responses come in, but my news items crossed in the mail with denelcor!rob. I would recommend that denelcor!rob defer his decision to withdraw the group for one week. Lots more has come across the net since the proposal was first made, so I think it's too soon to call it. /Steve

I can see it now on 60 minutes. Dan Rather says something like: Tonight we are going to investigate a nationwide computer network for gays. Actually, if there's so much discussion, why not create it? There are probably enough hommosexuals on the net (or those interested in reading/learning about it to warrant its creation. It'll be busier than net.games.pacman. -- Steve Silberberg

Can you imagine having to explain the meaning of the group to every new net user? And no, it's real meaning can't go in the list of groups, because that is the article that most management types read to learn what is going on in the net. -- eric ...!seismo!umcp-cs!aplvax!eric

#R:teklabs:-247300:uiuccsb:3700003:000:892 uiuccsb!leimkuhl Oct 18 12:12:00 1983 Since when have we had to hide things from the host manager types, anyway. Most of the administrator types I've known (and I've known a few) have been broad minded and would not consider interfering with freedom of information. I see no reason whatsoever for the protracted debate about the pros and cons of a newsgroup for gays. Why not just call it net.gays? That way new users wouldn't have to decipher "motss" to find the group. I really am astounded by all the negative comments on the formation of such a group. When one considers the kind of esoteric groups that spring up from time to time on the net, it's probably about time there was a group for such a large population, anyway. As for the media, I think it's far more likely we'd be criticized for halting the formation of such a group than for forming it. Ben Leimkuhler (uiucdcs!uiuccsb!leimkuhl)
