[comp.sys.mac.hypercard] Hypercard front end for S1032?

daniel@lamont.ldgo.columbia.edu (04/17/91)

Hello,
I'm currently learning how to script in Hypercard 2.0 and am being asked to
justify my spending work time on this activity. One question that I'm being
asked is whether Hypercard can be used as a front end for our main databases.
These are written in S1032 on a MicroVAX 3100 running VMS. This task is
probably beyond my skills right now, but would give me something to shoot for.
It would also allow me to justify using some work time for this purpose.
Any and all responses accepted. Thanks for the help.

First off, Dan, I must say that I am prejudiced. I think Hypercard
makes a great front end to EVERYTHING! 'nuff said.

Yes, you may (should be able to, can) make Hypercard act as a front end
to a VAX. I'm sure many people do. I have.

While you're learning hypercard, you must also investigate your
communications mechanisms. Do you use serial port or appletalk or
TCP/IP - whatever. Then find the Hypercard tools (XCMDS & XFCNS) that
have already been written for that type of communication and use them to
send and receive commands/strings/whatever with your VAX program(s).

Good Luck!
