[comp.sys.mac.hypercard] Checking for valid text insertion point

Does anyone know how to check if there's a valid text insertion
point in a card field? I'd like to use the "type" command to
enter a standard text string into fields, but unless the user
has clicked the mouse in a field, the "type" goes nowhere,
giving a string of error beeps.
