I just received a copy of Hypercard 2.1, it came with the System 7.0 upgrade. I don't want to upgrade my mac to 7.0 yet, but would be interested in using the new version of HyperCard. Does HyperCard 2.1 run on mac os 6.0.5 or anything less than 7.0. I thought I had read somewhere that it could not. Thank-you for your time DM Lombardi.

Careful engineers made that happen on purpose, so that everyone who runs 2.0 now will have the benefit of the bug fixes in 2.1 immediately, without having to upgrade to System 7.0. When you try to use one of the new features of HyperCard 2.1 under System 6.x that required System 7.0, HyperCard will either display a dialog that says "Not supported by this version of the System." or set the result, as appropriate. HyperCard 2.0v2 also runs under System 7.0, although there are some minor inconveniences. For instance, the Help menu sometimes disappears and you can't get it back until you change the menubar from HyperTalk. HyperCard 2.0 has the same minor problems under 7.0 that 2.0v2 has, and as an extra special bonus, it crashes the second time you use the "Link to" dialog. (One engineer got careless there, but we took him aside and straigtened him out.) HyperCard 1.2.5 runs better under System 7.0 than it does under System 6.0.7 -- it won't freeze the machine when the system beeps under 7.0, thanks to a tweak in the system. But it's not 32-bit clean, has lots of 3-year-old bugs, and it's just not as cool as 2.0 or 2.1, although many people swear that it's faster. (In fact, it's faster in some regards, much slower in others.) HyperCard 1.2.3 is an interesting story, but it's Friday and I want to go home, so I'm out of here. Kevin Calhoun jkc@apple.com
