[comp.sys.mac.hypercard] HC and Apples 7.0 upgrade kit

rgoldstone@OAVAX.CSUCHICO.EDU (Robin Goldstone) (05/23/91)

I am a little unhappy about Apple's 7.0 upgrade options. In January I purchased
the Claris $49 upgrade to HC 2.0v2. This entitles me to a free upgrade to
HC 2.1. Well, Apple's System 7.0 upgrade is $99 and includes 7.0 software,
documentation and HC 2.1. Since the software itself can be downloaded for
free, and I am already entitled to HC 2.1 for free, I would be paying $99
for documentation only. Apple is also selling a 5-pack of documentation for
$249, which is roughly $50 per set.

So as I can see it, I am either going to have to pay $99 or find 4 other
people to go in on a 5-pack. I think it is unfair of Apple to overlook
those of us who bought HC 2.0v2 legitimately from Claris.

The HyperCard 2.1 included with System 7 is the HyperCard "Lite" collection,
which is basically the application, the stunted home stack, audio help, the
audio address stack, and the audio appointments stack. So, actually, you paid
your $49 for the very nice tools stacks and the HyperCard documentation from
Claris. Also, receiving HyperCard from Apple (whatever means) does not qualify
you for future updates from Claris. Your observation about paying $99 for
system 7 documentation is essentially correct (you are at an EDU site, ask for
the educational discount price which is about $20 less), and you'll have to
decide whether the system 7 documentation is worth that to you. It really has
nothing to do with HyperCard, though, the HC in the system 7 upgrade is
basically a give away anyway.
