[comp.sys.mac.hypercard] Hypercard's Audio Palette and MacRecorder

smz@tove.cs.umd.edu (Zakar) (05/31/91)

The Hypercard 2.1 Basics manual that came with the system 7 personal
upgrade package says:

"If your computer has a sound input device (such as a microphone or
MacRecorder(TM)), you can use the Audio Palette..."

Well, I do have a MacRecorder and tried to record using it. I received a
dialog box saying "No compatible recording hardware is available."

I called Apple who, naturally, referred me to Farallon. The person
I spoke to at Farallon thought my problem was that I didn't have a new
enough release of SoundEdit. I wasn't able to convince her that the Audio
Palette in HC shouldn't require an application but I understood her logic.
I could record sounds with SoundEdit and play them back or edit them with
Audio Palette. But that wasn't my question.

Can you use the MacRecorder to record sounds with Audio Palette?
Rumaging through the system with resedit, I discovered a .AppleSoundInput
driver. I suspect that I may need a customized version for MacRecorder so
I'll continue to pester Farallon for closer examination of the problem.
In the meantime, can anyone shed some light on it?

Sure, just get Farallon to send you the free SoundEdit 2.0.3 upgrade disk.
It includes a sound input driver which, when put in the system folder, will
allow you to use the MacRecorder for input in HyperCard, in the Sound control
panel, and in other applications that support sound input.

The key is to have a new system extension that installs a sound input
driver for the external hardware. When 6.0.7 came out, I wrote my own
(which is not a task for the lighthearted) for my Cedar Sound Board. I got
it to a late beta stage and started looking for testers. Alas, at the
time (Jan.) nobody had a real use for the driver. I don't know if it will
work with the MacRecorder hardware, because I don't have one; but in theory
it should. (It works fine for my hardware with sys7.0 sound control panel
and Hypercard). Anyway, if people are interested in it and are willing
to write me responses as to the functionality of my driver, I'd be willing
to send it out to anyone interested in beta testing it.
BTW, I'm pretty sure that Farralon does include an input driver in the
newest version of SoundEdit but I didn't buy it so I don't know how well
it works.

Yes. The most recent issue of MacWorld came out, and it says that there is
a new version just released that supports the LC and si microphones.

I went upstairs for clarification on this since it didn't sound right
to me.

Here's the straight dope: All you NEED is the MacRecorder driver.
If you have a MacRecorder, then you should already have SoundEdit.
(SoundEdit and the MacRecorder are sold in the same box). So
what our TechSport was telling you is that you should upgrade to
the newest version of SoundEdit which supports the Sound Input Manager
AND includes the MacRecorder driver.

If however you have a MacRecorder Voice Digitizer (a smaller version
of the MacRecorder without line or mic in) you don't have SoundEdit.
In this case, we can send you just the driver.

Anyhow, call our Tech Support dudes back. This is an easy one to
clear up.
