There has been some very interesting dialog going on with the USSR Amateur Radio and Scientific communities about the establishment of a packet radio network in the Soviet Union. The US and many other countries have rapidly developing amateur packet radio networks. There is also a growing number of amateur radio sattelites with computer mailbox or store and forward capabilities in service or in planning. Many of these amateur radio sattelites are in orbits that take them over the Soviet Union many times a day. Connecting a Soviet packet radio electronic mail system to the rest of the world would be quite possible and is being studied in both hemispheres. If you want to read about some of these look through the last few weeks of rec.ham-radio and rec.ham-radio.packet. If you are interested in getting into amateur packet radio the requirements for licensing to this service have been greatly reduced this year (5 wpm morse code and a 30 question multiple choice test). -- John D.
