That comment I made was from Foley and Van Dam, Fundamentals of Computer Graphics (quoting from a paper by Myer and Sutherland on F&VD page 391, Ch. 10): "...They used the term wheel of reincarnation to describe the process of adding successively more arithmetic and logic/decision-making capability via extra registers and instructions into the DPU until it becomes essentially a full-fledged CPU. This CPU-like DPU then acquires its own rudimentary DPU, starting the next incremental growth cycle. The authors characterize a numberof then-popular display systems in terms of the number of times each design had gone around the wheel..."
