[comp.society.futures] Drugs, Law Enforcement, America

vespa@ssyx.ucsc.edu (Adam Alexander Margulies) (04/30/88)

	Couldn't help jumping in :-)

People who think that more law enforcement is what we need to cure this
society's ills fascinate me. I would like to hear what they say after reading
two books near and dear to my bleeding, liberal heart.

"The Crime of Punishment", by Carl Menninger. and
"The Rich get Richer and the Poor get Prison", by Jeff Reiman.

The latter book describes a thought experiment in which
some graduate sociology students try to think of the worst possible
justice system, the one in which the most crime would be fostered.
They realized that after some thought, their distopia almost
perfectly matched the current American justice system.

well, enough for now. This is after all, COMP.society.futures. But I
think the issues will be applicable to computer topics as well.
I said, type it NOW, Adam! || ||Adam Margulies |
